The Herāt Emirate is a not so lawless region in Southern Asia, formerly controlled by the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. The Tadjikistan invaded Afghanistan in 1977 and 1982 and annexed part of the DRNA in 1984, to the DRA's dismay. Herāt Emirate, became an autonomous region in the new DRA in 2010.

On September 27, 2009, Ismail Khan survived a suicide bomb that killed 4 of his bodyguards in Herat, as he was driving to Herat Airport The powerful explosion occurred on the way there. A few days later, the Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, claimed responsibility and said the target was Mr Khan.

Ismail Khan was almost forced to give up his rule in Herat, but was allowed autonomy with in the DRA.
